Becoming followers of Jesus who get it: it's about him, not me; it's about them, not me; it's about us, not me. That's the vision of GFMC; that's who we are striving together to become. It's a vision bigger than we are and we will need God's help to live it out. Fortunately, God is all about help!
The first followers of Jesus, the disciples, jumped at the chance to follow Jesus, but what do you think their motivation was at first? If you follow their story in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, you'll see that their first motivation was...well...themselves! Check it out! They struggled repeatedly with who was the greatest, the most important in Jesus' eyes, and what was in it for them! Not exactly followers of Jesus who got it, were they?
But, they eventually got it! And their motivations for following Jesus became about him and others, not themselves. Read Acts and you'll see.
It raises an important question for you and me: What is our primary motivation for following Jesus? Fire insurance? A ticket to heaven? The blessings he pours out in this life? An assumption that following him will somehow make life easier or immune from difficulties?
Or...is it the simple and profound, yet difficult motivation of being like him?
If you're not there yet, you can be. We all can be. Followers of Jesus who get it.
